Critical Essays
The essays in this website provide historiographical and methodological overviews of key problems in the study of mass mortality in Mexico before the 20th century. Some will examine spatio-temporal clusters (e.g. Cocoliztli ca. 1545) while others will take a thematic approach (e.g. Climate and Depopulation). To various degrees, the essays will use the ecocrisis database--along with other historical or archaeological evidence--to build arguments, to visualize patterns in time and space, and to list key primary and secondary sources.
