Indian Ocean
It is undeniable that pollution is a pressing issue especially when it comes to marine life. The Indian Ocean is currently the second most polluted ocean in the world with enough pollution to equal 38,000 elephants. A major component of this pollution is microplastics which are made up of 90% plastic garbage. The Indian Ocean is arguably quite essential as it occupies 20% of the earth’s surface and is a habitat for diverse marine species. Many of these marine species are also useful for humans, such as through the consumption of seafood which is one of the healthiest sources of protein. In addition, the ocean serves as a migration route for various wildlife. Seeing how essential the ocean is to various aspects of life, the need for change is imperative. Some proposed solutions so far include stricter government regulations, the formation of anti-pollution groups, increased public education, and the implementation of renewable energy sources. The media that you will see throughout this page reflects the magnitude of garbage and pollutants that occupy our oceans.
